Level 3 Extended Diploma Health & Social Care

This course is suitable for anyone interested in developing their knowledge and understanding of the health and social care field. It provides you with a route to higher education or you can use it to improve your employment opportunities in the health and social care field.

Possible Degree Options
Higher education opportunities include a degree in nursing, midwifery, social work, occupational therapy and many other professions. Alternatively, it can also lead to direct entry into employment within the health and social care services such as a home help, clinical support nurse, occupational assistants and so on as well as posts administered by the NHS and Social Services.

Course Content

Topics Covered

The course consists of 180 credits that are required for completion over two years. 80 of these credits will be obtained in the following core units:

  • Unit 1: Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care
  • Unit 2: Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care
  • Unit 3: Health, Safety and Security in Health and Social Care
  • Unit 4: Development

Through the Life Stages

  • Unit 5: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
  • Unit 6: Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care
  • Unit 7: Sociological Perspectives for Health and Social Care
  • Unit 8: Psychological Perspective for Health and Social Care

The remaining 100 credits can be obtained through a range of optional units.

Assessment
The majority of units are assessed through a portfolio of work, as well as through presentations, role plays, class tests and group work.

Work Experience
Students will complete 100 hours of work experience. You will need to apply for a Disclosure and Debarring Services (DBS) certificate for the safeguarding of children, which costs £45 (at the time of print) and this will need to be completed at the Health and Social Care Taster day, before enrolling on the course.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs grade 9-4, including Maths and English.

Careers

You can go into a wide variety of careers such as social work, nursing, midwifery, and occupational therapy. You may also consider areas such as Social Care, Early Years Education, and Childhood Studies.
