Overview

Level 2 Health & Social Care

This course is targeted at anyone interested in developing their knowledge and understanding of the health and social care field.

This programme provides you with a route to the Level 3 in Health and Social Care, or you can use it to improve your employment opportunities in the health and care field.

Completion of the Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care can lead to progression to the Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care, or into an apprenticeship. Students need to achieve at least a merit to progress, as well as a grade 5 in their English and Maths if they do not already have it.

Course Content

Topics Covered

The course has 10 units of assessment. To complete the BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate you will study the following core units:

  • Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development (Exam)
  • Unit 2: Health and Social Care Values

As well as the following mandatory units:

  • Unit 3: Effective Communication in Health and Social Care
  • Unit 9: Healthy Living (Exam)

For the optional units, we currently study:

  • Unit 6:The Impact of Nutrition on Health and Wellbeing
  • Unit 7: Equality and Diversity in Health and Social Care
  • Unit 8: Individual Rights in Health and Social Care
  • Unit 10: Human Body Systems and Care of Disorders
  • Unit 12: Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Social Care
  • Unit 13: The Health and Social Care Sector

Assessment
The majority of units are assessed through a portfolio of work, as well as through presentations, role plays, class tests and group work.

Exams
Two of the units (1 and 9) at Level 2 are assessed by an exam in January.

Work Experience
This is a fantastic opportunity to work in the field of Health and Social Care. Work experience forms an important part of your course, and is compulsory. You will attend a work placement of our choosing for a period of one week in term two. You will need to apply for a Disclosure and Debarring Services (DBS) certificate for the safeguarding of children, which costs £45 (at the time of print) and this will need to be completed at the Health and Social Care Taster day, before enrolling on the course.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grade 3 and above, including Maths and English.

Careers

Possible Career Options

With further training or study, you can go into careers such as social work, nursing, residential care work, housing and the probation service. You may also consider areas such as Social Care, Early Years Education, and Childhood Studies.
