Overview

Level 2 Art and Design

This course provides a broad approach to Art that allows students to develop a sound grounding in a number of areas such as painting, sculpture, graphic design, textiles, photography and drawing, whilst still exploring the subject in depth.

Students will be able to develop artistic ideas and skills through sustained investigations and exploration, and identify, interpret and analyse methods and outcomes.

On completion of this course you may progress onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design. This will enable progression to university or employment at a technician level.

Alternatively, you may enter employment into the industry and return to study further professional qualifications on a part time basis.

Course Content

Topics covered

This course helps to prepare you for Level 3 and making choices about your career pathway interests by introducing you to different areas of study. 2D, 3D, graphics and photography. The level of independent learning increases and encourages your personal ideas in response to briefs.

Each course structures are made up of 8 units. 2 core and 4 specialist units. There are also 2 exam units. The work is assessed by the college and then validated by the awarding body. The course is 20 hours per week for 36 weeks.

Introduction to Specialist Pathways in Art and Design Contextual References in Art and Design

Optional Units: Candidates will also work towards these 4 units:

  • Design Crafts Briefs
  • Visual Arts Briefs
  • Graphic Design Briefs

Exams

There are 2 exams which are taken in the later part of the course.

  • Creative Project in Art and Design (10 hour exam)
  • Recording for Creative Intentions (5 hour exam)

Level 2 Certificate in Art

Contains two units, the first unit is a workshop based one where students will learn various skills in many areas of art and design. This will include: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and digital processes.

The second unit is a personal project. During this unit students are able to select their favourite materials, techniques and processes and create work based on a theme.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grade 3 and above.
